Metro runs two shared-mobility programs. The vans cost the agency $32.40 a boarding and recover 1.7 percent of that at the farebox. The bikes cost Metro an estimated $8.77 a trip, because the City of Los Angeles pays two thirds of the bill. In the one zone the two services both cover, the bikes recorded more trips than the vans recorded boardings.
Adjusted for inflation, the median Los Angeles home costs about 8.8 times what it did in 1940 while median rent costs about 2.7 times. A minimum-wage worker needed 95 hours to cover a month's rent in 1940 and 102 hours in 2020.
Police is the big one at $379 million, but the county also sells its cities fire protection, road maintenance, tax collection, sewers, parks, probation services and a coroner. The Lakewood Plan made contracting for municipal services the norm here, and the county's cost recovery accounts are public.
Annual fines issued per household equal 0.426 percent of median household income in the poorest tenth of city census tracts, compared with 0.043 percent in the richest. These figures describe where tickets were written, not the incomes of the drivers who received them.
