The Donor Map

The filings carry no street address, only city, state and ZIP. Every dot is placed by population-weighted sampling of census tracts inside the donor's ZIP code, seeded so the same row always lands in the same place. The pattern is therefore real at ZIP scale and simulated below it: a single dot is not an address, and clustering within a ZIP code is an artifact of the sampling rather than an observed distribution. Contributions from outside California, 8.2% of the rows, cannot be mapped and are reported as an off-map total instead.
