Where Los Angeles builds
The neighborhoods finishing the most homes, month by month: a rolling twelve-month count for every part of the city, 2016 to 2026.
Each figure is the number of homes finished in that month and the eleven months before it, so one large building lifts a neighborhood for a year and then drops out again. Downtown peaks at 3,811 homes in the year to September 2020 and finishes on 2,121; every large producer is below its own peak, and North Hollywood is down 77% from a peak it only reached in January 2024.
A home is counted the month the city signs the building’s permanent certificate of occupancy. Tenants move in on a temporary certificate, which Los Angeles does not publish, so a building can be occupied well before it appears here — the Grand LA opened in 2022 and was certified in 2026. City of Los Angeles only; Santa Monica, Culver City, West Hollywood, Burbank, Glendale and Long Beach run their own permit systems.
