A day of parking tickets

On Thursday 15 October 2020 Los Angeles parking enforcement issued more in fines than on any other day on record. We mapped it.

Fines issued, not revenue collected: the figure is the posted fine and takes no account of dismissals, appeals, non-payment, late penalties or collections. The ticker lands on the API’s own total for the day, checked before and after the render.

Dot size and brightness are proportional to the fine. Street cleaning runs in the orange against a cool blue for everything else, which is the whole finding in one glance: two thirds of a record day is a street-sweeping schedule.

The eighteen neighborhoods named are the ones with the most citations that day, counted inside their own boundaries.
