The Year Built Map
Color is YearBuilt, the year of the improvement standing on the parcel today, so this is a map of what survived rather than of when Los Angeles was built. Demolished buildings are not on the roll at all and every early decade is undercounted by exactly what did not survive, which is why downtown reads new: it was rebuilt. EffectiveYearBuilt is not a fix, being adjusted upward for major renovation and disagreeing with YearBuilt on 41.2% of parcels. 219,088 parcels carry no usable year and are not drawn, and 1,266 more stand on Santa Catalina Island, outside the frame. Parcels are placed by centroid, so a condominium tower is many parcels on one point. Source: the Los Angeles County Assessor 2025 secured roll.
